When Do I Need An Attorney?
Chances are will need an attorney in any divorce or related matter if:
- You want an annulment
- There is a history of domestic violence
- You have minor children and cannot agree on custody or visitation
- You have assets worth more than $100,000.00
- Your spouse has an attorney
- You and your spouse live in different states
- You and your spouse have retirement or pension plans worth different values
- You feel uncertain about the divorce process
- You do not know your spouse’s whereabouts
You probably do not need an attorney if:
- You are filing a summary dissolution
- You own no property
- Have little or no debts
- Have no children
- And you reach an agreement.
- You have reached an agreement and you have help in preparing and filing the paperwork.
However, you should always consult with an attorney before you separate, even if you are not intending on hiring one.
