Retaining an attorney is a very personal decision, and its importance should not be underestimated. Obviously, the most important criteria are that the attorney is competent and knows the law. It is recommended that you hire someone who has been in practice for more than five years, and handles family law matters exclusively. While you can go through a referral service, there is no guarantee that the person recommended will be competent.
Most clients value communication with their attorney above all other factors. They want someone who will call them back, explain their rights, and keep them informed about the status of their case.
The best way to find an attorney is by word of mouth. Ask friends and acquaintances for names, and then thoroughly interview the attorney. How easy is he/she to get a hold of? Did he/she thoroughly communicate your rights? Is that person easy to talk to and understand?
You should interview at least two attorneys in person before you make your decision, and it would be a good idea to speak to a half dozen over the phone. Beware of any attorney that makes strong predictions, or has a radically different opinion than the rest of your interviewees. Chances are he or she is telling you what you want to hear. You need to hear the truth.
